What was Bill Belichick thinking?

Would you have gone for it on that fourth-and-two? Are you an angry Patriots fan?

Here's what he was thinking, "Let me just take a little gamble here and see what happens. Hell, I'm going to get my six figure salary anyway."

thanks! As a baseball fan and someone who knows little about football, this "best" answer means a lot. :)

I would have punted the ball but I expect he knows more about coaching football than I do. He apparently didn't think his defense could stop the Colts so he took the gamble that Brady could get them the first down.

I just watched all the interviews here in New England and the best answer as to why Bill Belichick did that is .. he saw an opportunity to win the game and he took it.

As usual Bill Belichick won't really answer the questions regarding why he does anything, ask him anything and he will just respond with "the team is focusing on the Jets"

When I look at the call to go for it like that (he was trying to take the opportunity to win the game right there) then I can see a logic in the move to go for it.

I am not angry as much as disappointed, to me the game that would define the New England Patriots as a top 3 team in the AFC and maybe the NFL as a whole was for them to beat Indy.

As an Indiana native and Colts fan, I will withhold judgment and just be thankful it worked out for my team. But football is a game, and becoming the hero or the villain is usually a pretty fine line.

He doesn't trust his defense. If he had the defense he had when they were winning championships there is no doubt in my mind that he would have punted. I don't care how good peyton manning is.

It just seemed like a kerfuffle. Maybe they were trying to draw Indianapolis off-sides, and accidentally ran a play instead of calling time-out before punting.
This was his most embarrassing moment since he left Cleveland.

You guys are really pinning this down but lets look at this from a realistic POV.

There was allot of miscommunication between Bill and his assistant coaches. All of the under study coaches all thought that they could tell the special teams what to do and kind of take it on the lamb.

It's not uncomon for a good team to have a slump once in a while.
(Every team has them)

The comunication between coaches and assistant coaches and managers and head coaches has been severly lacking in the past couple of months.
Managers want full disposition over what happens with the team and good managers will probably give it to them.

Although we need to look at this from the most probably and best point of view.

They had a bad day. And it was bound to happen.

Kind Regards,
@XDS

I would have punted. He must have thought he better get a first down because if you punt the Colts will score and win the game. He had no confidence in his defense to hold the lead. I would have punted. You have to punt there and let the defense stop the Colts from driving down the field and scoring. A championship caliber team would be able to do that. New England doesn't have that this year. The favorites for the Super Bowl are the Colts and the Saints of Vikings.

No way I would have gone for it on fourth-and-two inside my own 35 yard line at that stage in the game. I understand you are trying to win the game and not give Peyton Manning another chance, but sometimes you have to look past the moment and consider the alternative. Most of the time there is a controversial call such as this we say it would be a non-issue if they had made that first down, but I don't think that is the case here. Even if they had made that first down, I think it was a poor decision that put his defense in a terrible position after he had shown no confidence in his defense. In that situation you have to punt the ball and rely on your defense to do what they get paid to do. Belichick is supposedly a defensive genius, he should have been able to devise a scheme to win the game on defense!

By the way, I am far from a Patriots fan (I'm a loyal Miami Dolphins fan), so I was actually glad he made that decision!

Saw this article on ESPN today, and thought it was pretty appropriate for this question. I like math, so I really liked the analysis they did in this article - http://espn.go.com/boston/columns/patriots/blog/_/post/4660828
