Chutney is made by grinding together various ingredients until they reach the consistency of paste, which can either be coarse or fine. They are dry and wet chutneys and yes they are also made with fruit in which case they are sweet. Chutneys in India are generally served with Idli and Dosa and these chutneys are normally made from tomato and coconut and have chilies in them. However, there are several different chutneys in India from where they originated and throughout the world, for more information on its origin and the different varieties check this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chutney
You can put chutney on anything to spice it up however; most often it is served along with samosa, dosa and rice. It is best to use dry chutneys with soft moist food and wet chutneys with dry food as this is a better combination.
