At the ninth-month checkup, children get their MMR, DtaP and IPV vaccines.
The MMR protects against measles, mumps and rubella. Measles is a virus, which causes a red rash and fever. If left untreated, it can lead to pneumonia or brain damage. Mumps is also a virus, but it causes fever and swollen neck glands, and rubella (German measles) can cause birth defects in utero. The DtaP protects against pertussis, tetanus and diphtheria. Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable coughing. Tetanus attacks the jaw and neck muscles causing “lockjaw”, and diphtheria can cause paralysis. IPV vaccines prevent polio.
On your child’s other checkups, they might receive another series of the vaccines described above as well as the meningitis vaccine, chickenpox vaccine, flu vaccine and rotavirus vaccine.
