What types of dogs interact most successfully with small children?

I am thinking about getting a dog for our family, but I constantly have small children in my home and I am worried that not all types of dogs would interact equally successfully with a young child. Should I look for a small dog or are larger dogs friendlier? Is there a certain breed that is especially child-friendly? Would it make a grand difference whether I got a puppy or an already grown dog?

If you have very small children then a rowdy puppy might be too much for them. An older dog who has had experience with children and is known to like them might be a better choice.

If you decide to get a puppy, I'd recommend one that is at least a medium-size breed, big enough to take a bit of rough play.

There are many breeds that would do, it depends not only on the ages of your children but what type of lifestyle your family lives and what you expect out of a dog. Most dogs who are raised with kids and socialized properly can be good playmates for them, but large and giant breeds can accidentally harm small kids.

Personally, I love beagles. They are great with kids, lively and playful dogs, but they do tend to bark a lot (which makes them good little watch dogs). They are on the small side of medium, usually about 25 pounds as adults.

Here are a few links below to help you choose the right dog:

Since Labrador Retrievers are very intelligent, friendly, caring, loyal and playful, I would say Labs are the most successful breed to interact with children. Proof? They have always been the top breed in the USA because of its characteristics.

For the most part dogs and children are a fantastic match. They often share a very close and special bond together. but when people ask what is the best dog breed for children i dont believe there is a right or wrong answer.

This is because the breed of the dog does not solely determing how your children and dog will get along. All dogs, regardless of breed type are individuals.

Here are some tips that will help you ensure that your child and dog get along;
1. Children must be taught the boundaries of what is and what is not acceptable behavior around dogs.
2. Avoid the larger boisterous breeds.
3. To greatly increase your chances of getting a sound, stable, well balance dog of good temperament always purchase your dog from a reputable dog breeder.
4. Get stuck into the puppy socialization process as soon as your new dog arrives home.
5. Its never too early to start some obedience training.
6. Never leave young children and a dog alone and unsupervises. No dog is 100% safe.
7. Do some research into the various dog breeds.

Here are some known breeds that are known to get along well with children;
1. Golden Retreiver
2. Australian Shepherd
3. Poodle
4. Boxer Dogs
5. Norfolk Terrier
6. Beagle
7. Labrador
8. Cocker Spaniel
9. English Bulldog
10. Bichon Frise
11. Whippet
12. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
