What type of video files can you play on a xbox 360?

I want to play video files from my computer on my xbox 360. I don't have xbox live so i cant get an update to play certain video formats. It definantly won't play MP4 or AVI files. I just need to know what type i need to convert the file to.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You don't actually need to pay for Xbox Live GOLD to be able to connect to the internet with your 360. The free service, Xbox Live Silver gives you access to updates/other stuff, pretty much everything except being able to play stuff online. Soon newer games will even have mandatory patches to your system on them (similar to what the psp did).

Here's the list of what your system will be able to play after updating.
http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/gamesandmedia/movies/videofaq/viewvideoplaybackfaq.aspx it should play MP4 and avi as long as they're encoded with the acceptable codecs listed there.

Also, instead of downloading the updates via LIVE, you could just burn the updates to a cd or dvd, which Microsoft tells you how to do here

Obviously the thing plays DVDs, but converting your content to MPEG2 is a huge hassle (and you'll only see standard def video that way). By putting your file on a flash drive you can play it directly from the box (and you can play back high def). But only the WMV format will work with flash drive files (without the update). Luckily the XBOX 360 does support all the Windows Media codecs, including Advanced Profile and VC-1. So whatever you encode will be played. You probably want to use VC-1 since it actually displays fields, not frames. Fields means the image changes 59.94 times every second, as opposed to frames which only change 29.97 times a second. In the Windows Media Encoder you need to select field encoding to get this behavior.

The video formats that xbox 360 supports are .wmv, .avi, .divx, H.264, MPEG-4 an so on.

If you got a video file and want to convert and put it to your Xbox 360 for playing, you have to use a xbox decoder to transcode video files to a xbox playable video

formats, like WMV, WMV HD.

The program I am using is Aunsoft Video Converter which is able to convert your video to xbox WMV flawlessly.

More info: http://www.aunsoft.com/video-converter/

Hope it is useful.
