What type of treatment is available for someone with anger management problems?

A close relative seems to be dealing with depression and is unable to control his anger. What type of treatment is available? What type of doctor should he see?

How would I go about confronting him about his anger issues?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I've been reading some articles about this, and it seems that the prevailing suggestion is to start with the family doctor, who can then refer to a "counselor" who specializes in anger management.

As far as treatment goes, there's a lot of information out there, and the articles I'm finding talk mostly about technique.

From http://www.anger-management-programs.net/anger-management-treatment.htm :

---Quote
Self-awareness and stress reduction in respect to certain situations is a popular method of anger management treatment. ... Therapeutic approaches usually include frustration tolerance training as well as meditation and relaxation techniques. A skilled licensed professional will help a client deal with anxiety, guilt, low self-esteem and can accurately identify depression and other emotional disorders that may be complicating anger management treatment.

From http://www.athealth.com/Consumer/disorders/anger2.html :

---Quote
Some of the most empirically supported interventions are cognitive-behavioral interventions including relaxation coping skills, cognitive interventions, behavioral coping and social skills training, and problem-solving skills training.

there are numerous structured and pre-packaged programs for helping people learn to manage their anger more effectively. These programs vary in intended audience, theoretical basis, teaching method, and actual skills and techniques used. A summary of several programs can be found in Anger Management 3: Structured Interventions.

See: http://www.ericdigests.org/2004-3/anger-3.html for information about the structured interventions mentioned above. These are techniques available to counselors in dealing with clients with anger management issues.

At http://ezinearticles.com/?Anger-Management-Treatment-Options---What-Is-Available-For-You?&id=1157824 , the writer outlines the different types of treatment, including one-on-one counseling, support groups (such as Rageaholics Anonymous), anger management courses, and anger management hypnosis.

I also found this article: How To Help A Friend With Anger Management Problems at http://www.angermanagementtechniques.net/how-to-help-a-friend-who-has-anger-management-problems.php which suggests ways to start the conversation and try to convince the person to seek help.

Some of the tips mentioned include--
*Never use the phrase "you always" or "you never," as this negative approach will most likely put them immediately on the defensive, sparking an angry outburst.
*Present the facts in a positive manner by beginning a conversation by explaining how sometimes their response to certain situations may tend to make others feel uncomfortable and ask if they are aware of it.
*Do not let yourself be drawn into an argument with them which will only tend to exacerbate the situation and do nothing to resolve the situation.
*Break off the talk with positive talk and plan to approach it at a later date.
*Choose a neutral setting, especially one that's on their own turf, so to speak, which will give the other person the feeling of being in control.

Hope this helps.

i am gonna give you advice based on my personal experience
i faced the situation in my past and was extremely violent..(i would break things never hurt anyone.).

i joined aerobic classes to release my physical stress that helped me because instead of using my angry energy on breaking things i was using it to work out..

i also keep clay dough..(the one kids play with)
so every time am stressed i just play with me ..mash it ..smash it..break it..put it back again...
just to relieve stress..you can try those small yellow stress balls..

yes i also played NFS video games..its a racing car game and instead of racing i used to bash and bang the cars everywhere on my way till the finish line

i know its sounds stupid but really works..
try it once,...its a lot cheaper than therapy
