What type of education does one need to become an archaeologist?

What does an archaeologist do? How much does an archaeologist earn to start and how much room for advancement is there for a beginning archaeologist? I don't know anything about the field, so be as precise as possible with your answers. Thank you!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In the United States Archaeology is classified as one of the four subfields of Anthropology (the others being culture, biological, and linguistics). Many people who pursue a career in Archaeology earn an undergraduate degree in Anthroplogy. One then 99% of the time must pursue a Masters while being the sidekick for a prominent archaeologist. This is bad because you are generally treated pretty badly - but great for EXPERIENCE! Experience is great because you are forced to appreciate that Indiana Jones and Archaeology are NOT synonomous. In any case, some of the topics you will get to learn about are: ethnobotany, taphonomy, OSTEOLOGY (the study of bones), migration patterns, and cultural habits. Many archaeologists must also be adept in grant writing in order to receive funding for their projects. As a result of this many archaeologists also earn a certificate in cultural resource management(CRM) or teaching to help pay the bills (approx $36,000 starting out).

Archaeology may be more complex and indepth than one might expect. It is the study of the past, and possibilities exist in many fields, anywhere from recent history to deep history. What field might you be interested in? Biology, climate, geology, civilization, mythology and religion? And so many more. Archaeologists do more than just dig, they research, analize, and formulize theories based on what they find, where, and when. As far as education most go on to achieve doctorates from universities that often involves a 4 year bachelors and 2 year masters first (another 2 years for doctorate). How much they make depends on a great deal, including the chosen area of expertice and who employs them. A good starting wage may be as low as 48,000 / year.
