What type of blood tests are performed on newborns?
When my son was born, we were required to stay at the hospital for at least 48 hours. I remember having to stay longer, because when the 48 hours were up, we had to wait for them to perform blood tests. When I took my son to his first doctors visit, I had to take him back to the lab for these tests. The hospital lost his first. The sticking of his feet was horrible, as they blood would barely come out and he was screaming.

I think your baby just had a heel prick blood test. This test is carried out before your baby is one week old. A tiny amount of blood is taken from your baby's heel in this test. Your baby is tested for an enzyme deficiency or phenylketonuria, a thyroid deficiency, sickle cell disorders and cystic fribrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a condition that affects the lungs and the digestive system. Your baby might cry a little when the blood is taken but he will recover from it fast.
The full newborn examination is done between 4 to 48 hours from birth. This will give your baby ample time to adjust to the outside world while allowing at the same time fro prompt medical attention in an unlikely event of any problems being detected.
