What tricks can your pet do?

I’ve been working with my dogs for a couple of weeks now and I taught all of them sit, down and stay. When I got our new puppy (and I use the term loosely because she is bigger than all of them) I started working with her and we’ve been to obedience class a couple of times. Everyone keeps telling me it’s a lost cause because she is too hyper. This afternoon everything clicked and she sat when I told her to; it was only for a second because she can’t stand to be still for very long. I was so proud and felt so accomplished. LOL So, it got me to wondering what sort of tricks do your animals do? Did you teach it to them or did they just start doing it on their own.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well done for accomplishing such a feat. Patience and persistence are what is needed when training any dog, and you obviously took some time and determination to achieve an understanding with your dogs, expecially the new "puppy!"

All my dogs are great at sitting and staying, and waiting. I only ever taught one of my dogs to do this, but as it usually involves food at the end, any other dog I have brought into my home tends to follow suit. Simply because they see the other dogs do it and getting rewarded, they copy and eventually realize that sitting and waiting brings them food (obviously not every time, but the expectation is there!)

But the best trick any of my dogs has learned is to train me to feed them every evening and walk them twice a day! LOL

Well. my Martha can sit and stare at the counter where we keep the dog biscuits until someone gives her one! I didn't train my dogs to do tricks but my adopted dog, Twix, can play dead.

The pets we have now can't do much of anything. My sister, who is living with me currently, has a miniature Australian shepherd that is just amazing. If she would teach her more, she would be able to do anything. Unfortunately, she doesn't have much time right now for that due to work. She only can sit for the most part.

I used to have a little mix Australian shepherd and blue heeler. He was a smart dog. I just worked with him for a couple of days and had him sitting, shaking hands, barking on demand and rolling over. The sky was the limit with him! However, the poor little guy wasn't smart enough to stay out the road. I really miss that little guy :( .
