What time is it at the North Pole? Does anybody know?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Pole#Time
there is no time zone so "......and no particular time zone has been assigned. Polar expeditions may use any time zone that is convenient, such as GMT, or the time zone of the country they departed from.

"Both the North and South Poles officially use Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), also known as Greenwich Mean Time. This time zone is based on highly precise atomic clocks kept at various world laboratories.

UTC is mostly used for scientific observations. For example, the North Pole web cam run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stamps its pictures with UTC numbers. However, people who work at or near the poles don't really live by UTC -- they often use the time zones of their nearest coworkers." - http://ask.yahoo.com/20050302.html

What is Co-ordinated Universal Time (UTC)?

"Replaced Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as the World standard for time in 1986. It is based on atomic measurements rather than the earth's rotation. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is still the standard time zone for the Prime Meridian (Zero Longitude)." - http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/utc.htm

To be clear, I did not quote a source that suggested otherwise. I'm glad we agree on this. I'm sorry you found the sources unhelpful. It was interesting to discover the lack of an official time zone. Sort of an open kitchen on clocks there - pick your favorite time zone and if you can't decide, use your neighbors! :)

I have not found confirmation that there is any official designation that the poles should use GMT. Anyone can use GMT/UTC anywhere but that does not make it the local time. At the south pole they clearly use New Zealand time. Time zones are generally a matter of local jurisdiction and convenience rather than science.

The lines of longitude that establish our time zones are so close at the North Pole, the Arctic region uses UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) when local time is necessary at the North Pole. The North Pole experiences six months of daylight and six months of darkness.

There being no official time for the geographic north pole (and nobody there to use a local time) you must be asking about the magnetic north pole.

The time there is the same as the west coast of the US, GMT - 8.

Since there are no permanent inhabitants of the North Pole no time zone has been designated.
Explorers who go there commonly use the time and time zone of the country they departed from. If they departed from London, England they would use GMT if they departed from New Hampshire, United States they would use EST.

Based on Sydney, Australian, time, minus 18 hours from your time. For example, now it is 8:18pm Thursday and now it is 2:18am Thursday in the North Pole, Alaska.

Since the north (and south) pole(s) are where the lines of longitude that make up the time zones of the world come together, it's practically everytime yet no time all at the same time!

What time is it at the North Pole? It is too late. Ask a drowning polar bear.
