What the heck is in buddawiggi's profile pic?

buddawiggi, despite being one of my favorite folks here.. will not qualify for best answer. Now... seriously.. what IS that?

I want a source. I want an artist.
Tip for best answer: M$3.35
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The artist is Brian Despain. I found a little more info on this man's artwork. Apparently a vain that runs through most of his pieces is the idea of robots and creatures living in harmony with each other. In a way, this piece, Rise of the Red Star, seems almost animated or CGI'ed, but it's done with oil paints.

Here's an interview with Brian so maybe you can get a better idea on where he's coming from as an artist.

Not a comment on this answer, but a comment on the question....

This is a question we have frequently asked ourselves with all the different pics he's used over time. :D

It's part of a painting by Brian Despain. You can see it (and more of the artist's work) here:

Now, if you're asking what is happening in that picture, I'm not entirely sure. But anything that manages to combine robots and cephalopods is A-OK in my book.

What is it?

Genius my friend. Pure genius.

Budda always has compelling avatars - interestingly, once called attention to, he often changes them (my guess is to keep us all guessing). I once wrote a comparison between the man and Hunter S. Thompson which was his avatar for quite some time. Shortly thereafter, the avatar was changed this intruging, and beautiful work of art.

I'm curious to see what the next one will be...

Here's my suggestions:

bruce lee Pictures, Images and Photos

Clinton Pictures, Images and Photos

Indiana Jones Pictures, Images and Photos

Dolly Parton Pictures, Images and Photos

I am always happy when my avatars come up for discussion because I try to put a true personalization into them and pick things that to me, at least at that moment, have a good representation of how I feel and my outlook on myself is at the moment. This selection is no different.

I found that painting by Brian Despain oddly enough while doing some research on American poet Ezra Pound. Odd connection I know but somehow in Google searches for images of Ezra Pound the artwork or Brian Despain came up and I was intrigued.

I would like to give my interpretation of the avatar.
The robot is me.. traveling through life
The Cephalopod or Octopus is Mahalo and the internet.. helping show me choices, offering guidance, and being my partner in my quest to be information-ally satisfied.
The Red Star Ball is my curiosity.. followed regardless of the direction the birds are flying.

The birds as well.. they are the direction of the group and my traveling in a direction different from them symbolizes my individualism and desire to satisfy my curiosity regardless of trend.

The windmill also.. it is a symbol of my desire to be like the group and despite my individualism actually want to fit in and be accepted. Allowing myself, when the wind blows interestingly, to draw energy from it and follow the "way the wind is blowing".

All of this must seem pretty odd but I thought I owed you guys an explanation for being curious about my motives in selecting my avatars.

Thanks for being interested. :) off I go.
