What steps should you take if you have experienced medical negligence?

I have a personal reason for asking this question. What steps should be taken if you have experienced medical negligence? It is a long story, but the gist of it is that my Mom was diagnosed with sever Bipolar. From the VERY beginning I suggest to the doctors it had to be Dementia, but they did not listen. I had Mom living with me and took her to every appointment because she was not able to answer questions truthfully. Her condition got so bad they suggested she live in their mental health program where they would monitor her. THEY didn't. Mom lost 85 pounds and was not big to begin with, and ended up have drug dealers find their way in and live with her. PS, Mom never did drugs, but she was not well enough to know not to let them move in. Long story short I finally got her diagnosed with Dementia and have her at a nursing home with a special dementia unit. She is putting weight back on and finally doing as good as she can, atleast she is SAFE. They make sure she eats and does not forget. I am so upset with the doctors at the mental health treatment center, not only for misdiagnosing her, but not watching her or making sure she ate. I feel it is medical negligence and I do not want what happened to my Mom, happen to anyone else. What steps should you take if you have experienced medical negligence?

These are five steps to follow if you experienced medical negligence:

1. Consult a lawyer who has sufficient experience in dealing with medical malpractice cases.

2. Cases like medical negligence is not very easy to prove so before you proceed to the court, make sure that you have enough evidence to establish that deviation from the normal standard or care harmed your mother and that other doctors of the same skill and experience level would not have acted given the same situation or condition.

3. Aside from establishing your claim you need to provide witnesses. A good testimony can really help your case. Try as many expert witnesses as you can.

4. Gather suitable documents that can prove that the injury suffered by your mother was caused due to her doctor's negligence.

5. Make sure to bring at least two copies of all the medical records of your mother to the court when trial begins. You have the right to demand a copy of her records from the doctor's office.

If you follow the above guidelines and collected enough evidence to prove your claim you are sure to win the case against a negligent doctor.
