What steps should the unemployed and uninsured take to get insurance?

Tip for best answer: M$2.35
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I believe that every state has their own DHS (Department of Human Services). You can go threre and apply. You will need to take proof of anyone living in your home and proof of any assetts you may have. You may not qualify for medicaid, but every state has some kind of insurance for people that don't have any insurance and are unemployed. You can call and they can send you an application to fill out, then they will set up an interview with a case worker. Here in Michigan if you are apply for insurance and a money grant you will have two workers.

Good Luck, And I hope this will help you and your family !!

The only thing missing from all of these answers is to apply for unemployment, other than that we all pretty much told you the same way to go.

ABSOLUTELY THE STATE WILL OFFER SOME ASSISTANCE AND WILL NEED TO APPLY FOR UNEMPLOYMENT. IN SOME COUNTIES YOU MAY HAVE TO TAKE WORK RELATED PROGRAMS, CLASSES YOU WILL NEED TO ATTEND FOR ASSISTANCE. I BELIEVE THERE IS ASSISTANCE EVERY WHERE AND ONE JUST NEEDS TO DO SOME RESEARCH TO DISCOVER THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE THAT BEST SUITS THE NEEDS. GOOD LUCK

This answer is going to heavily depend on where you live. The best bet is to look up your state human services department and give them a call or go to the website and see what they recommend. Also there are a variety of non-profit social service groups in every city that should be able to point you in the right direction.

If you already have a doctor or place you go for medical treatment it would be a good idea to ask them. They should be fairly knowledgable about the options that area available in your area.

Goodluck

First of all, there is Medicaid for those who have depleted their assets and have nowhere else to turn. Qualifying for Medicaid can be very difficult, complicated and time consuming. If you own your home or vehicle (worth more than $2,000), you will not qualify for Medicaid.

If you have children, there are almost always state-subsidized programs which will help them, but you might be left on your own. I would check the websites of your state's unemployment department to check this out, they should be able to help you. Every state has some sort of program to help those who can't afford to pay for insurance (I am assuming health insurance here).

If you would like to provide some more information (your state) I would be glad to assist further.

Go to your local job services. They will have forms and information on how to apply for aid of all sorts, including medicare/caid, food stamps, and so on. They can also help you find a job in most situations and affordable housing.

If you are in the US, you can search by State and the information will be on the government home page on the net. If you don't have the net, go to a local library where they will have access.
