What steps do you take when husband or wife dies?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Chances are the spouse's Will will give everything to the surviving spouse. So there isn't much to do there.
Once that is over, I would collect the life insurance, take enough money out for living expenses for the next 6 to 9 months maybe even a year. Then I would put the rest of the money in savings and then grieve. Once I felt better, then I would start figuring out what to do, where to live, etc.
For the most part I would take my time and rely on friends and family when needed.

I like this answer but I am speaking as much about this as when one hires a lawyer to look at a trust versus when one checks with the financial advisor, and so on. You did a nice job here, and if I felt it fully addressed the issue I would have awarded it. I will look for your posts. You are a good writer, and very kind with your answers. Thank you!
I admit, I had a harder time with this question. What exactly were you looking for? Like how to plan the funeral and what not? If that is the question then I really don't know. I think that's why I would ask my family to come and help me.
