What steps can parents take to prevent tragedies like former Eagle's QB Randall Cunningham's son drowning in a hot tub recently?
Sadly, the two-year-old son of former Eagles QB turned pastor Randall Cunningham was pronounced dead after drowning in a hot tub. Cunningham was out of town at the time, and the hot tub was one he used for Baptisms. What do you think parents can do to prevent tragedies like this one, and do you think it could have been avoided?

1.) Supervise your children- All too often parents are just passively watching their kids, it is just a fact of life. But when your kids have access to a body of water they must be closely watched. If you have a pool, that may mean you have to go outside any time your kids play in the back yard. This is the biggest step anyone can take. This also means anyone who watches your kids has clear rules and knows your expectations when it comes to supervising your children.
2.) Teach your kids to swim- It takes time to teach kids to swim but you can teach them water safety skills. They may not be able to swim laps, but if they most kids can learn quickly how to jump off the bottom of a shallower pool to grab the side or to roll onto their back and grab the wall. -This in the long term will do a lot, but with younger children it DOES NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF SUPERVISION.
3.) Provide safeguards to restrict access to the water. - Gates, fences, etc that are secured and restrict access to the body of water. Just remember though, it only takes leaving the gate open or in this tragic case leaving the cover off a hot tub to loose a child. Again supervision of the child takes priority
Stopping kids from drowning takes multiple layers of protection. Parent or Adult supervision is the ultimate protection. The other things do help your chances, but are not end all solutions. Stopping kids from drowning is a long term process that requires close attention anytime kids are around water.

I like your answer and sent you a small tip (I wish it was more!) It is absolutely tragic when things like this happen, but there is no substitute for increased parental supervision and responsibility. Thanks for your input.
