Phoenix does not have a city bird. The phoenix is used as its emblem, however since the phoenix is only a Greek myth, it cannot be considered the official bird of Phoenix, Arizona.
While the “official bird of Phoenix” is not listed, the state bird of Arizona is. The cactus wren is the state bird of Arizona. It generally lives in yucca, palo verde trees, or saguaro cacti (which are native to the Sonoran Desert). It is just over half a foot long (generally 8 inches) and eats insects as well as fruit and seeds. It obtains all of it’s water “from food”. It is brown with speckles. Although it builds many nests in a cactus, it only lives in one hole. The other nests are used as decoys. The cactus wren mates for life and is defensive of its territory.
It was added made the state bird of Arizona in 1973.
