What sort of damage can breeding a dog at 11 months incur?

I finally got my Malamute a mate, and she had a heat. So I kept them separated for a little over 2 weeks after she stopped bleeding. Then when I let them play again I found them "tied".. three times. She's 11 months old and he is a little over 2 years. I don't know if she's pregnant yet, but there is surely a chance. I know that you shouldn't breed dogs before their 3rd heat. According to her previous owners (craigslist rescue) she had not had a heat prior to this though I doubt their knowledge she was clearly always tied out on a chain and had little human interaction. It's possible this was her first heat.

So are there risks associated with my possible accidental breeding at 11 months?

"Ideally, a b***h should only be bred every other year and she should not be bred much before two years of age. The season closest to the second birthday is a good one to start with; certainly no earlier than this. In some breeds, you may need to wait one more season before beginning. By this time, she is better prepared mentally for having puppies than she would have been with her first few seasons. Her physical growth is complete and pregnancy at this point won't endanger her health, provided that she is healthy to begin with.
It's important, however, to keep the frequency of breeding low. Even at maximum, you want to allow at least one unbred season between breedings. This allows your b***h to rest and regain her strength. A b***h that whelps too often will produce weaker puppies more likely to die, and the repeated pregnancies are pretty rough on her, too. "

Since she is so young she may not have the maternal instincts she needs, or be fully grown. Being pregnant may stunt her growth and she may not give proper care to the puppies. You will have to do this. Also, get an x-ray to see how many pups there are if she is pregnant. Her birth canal will be smaller and there is the chance a pup can get stuck, either blocking the others from coming out or staying in for good. This would cause that one to decay inside of her and she will die.

Also get her to a vet to make sure that she, and your male for that matter, don't have brucellosis (doggy STD) as it will cause infertility in the dogs and can cause a litter of puppies to be aborted or die shortly after birth.

My friend's dog bred too soon and had to have a c-section to get the second pup out - to the tune of 2 grand in vet bills! Not a fun story. Not something you could necessarily foresee. Malamutes are bigger dogs, so maybe that won't happen. Why not call your regular vet and ask a general question over the phone? There might be something you could do now to make the birthing easier later
