What songs should I add to my wedding playlist?

I'm working on creating an iPod playlist of songs for my wedding. Naturally, there will be people of all ages and backgrounds there, so I'm looking for songs that most people will know, enjoy, and most importantly, want to get up and dance to. I'm pretty set as far as slow songs go, since there will be fewer of these, so am looking for ideas for more upbeat music that spans generations - perhaps classic rock-type songs, like Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl."

*While the "best answer" will get the tip, I'll also be handing out individual tips to those who provide me with good ideas
*No country please!

Hopefully in your slow set you already have Israel Kamakawiwo's ukulele version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". I've seen it used in several weddings and even as father-daughter dances and it was always very touching. The version is great.
As far as upbeat songs that span generations there are a few oldies that stand out as always fun. "Shout" by the Isley Brothers is always a crowd pleaser; with that breakdown section...classic.

"The Twist" By Chubby Checker, and then "Twist and Shout" by the Beatles. It makes for a nice three song segue set.

"One Love," Midwest City - This lovely song by a virtually unknown quartet from Oklahoma epitomizes what a great wedding song is.

Now for some upbeat suggestions.

"You Sexy Thing" (Hot Chocolate) - known song, everybody loves it.
"Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" (The Blues Brothers) - you must get up and dance at this one.
Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve - classic
Celebration by Kool & The Gang - you can not miss with this one.
Walk This Way - Run DMC & Aerosmith - one of the legends.

I used to love "You Sexy Thing" (went through a bit of a disco phase during my high school years), and had totally forgotten about it.

Good call on the Blues Brothers song as well - never would have thought of that one, either!

And "Celebration," of course, is a wedding classic.

Thanks for the great suggestions!

Everyone wants to have a good time at the reception, so you should play songs that most people will enjoy at any age. So first of all, I bet anything by the Beatles or Michael Jackson will go over well. Definitely look into Motown and any oldies. Maybe even throw some ABBA in there, haha. And DEF classic rock!

Rolling Stones - Start Me Up
Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
Prince - Kiss
Van Halen - Jump
Guns & Roses - Paradise City / Sweet Child of Mine
Joan Jett - I love Rock and Roll
Queen - Bohemian Raphsody / Somebody to Love
Kiss - Rock & Roll All Night
The Who - Who Are You
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me

I used to be a wedding DJ and I've got some suggestions that usually worked for me:

Brickhouse
Play that Funky Music
Shout
Shake a Tail Feather (James Brown)
Respect
Groove is in the Heart
Bust a move
Hip Hop Hooray
Thriller
Wonderful Tonight

See, the trick is to get the girls dancing. Once they start, pretty much everthing else falls in line.
I used to also play Dave Matthews dueing dinner and buffet time.

Hope you guys have fun!

For Slow Songs:
Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
She - Elvis Costello
After An Afternoon - Jason Mraz
The Way You Look Tonight - Micheal Buble

And for Fast Songs:
Send me on my way - Rusted Root (if you can't dance to that, you have no soul)
Ramble On - Led Zeppelin (Rocked the house at my wedding)
Rappers Delight - Sugarhill Gang (Awwww Yeah!)
And Cornbread by Dave Matthews Band if you can find a good copy

Congrats on the wedding!!!

Congratulations on the wedding @kalane! You already have some good suggestions by other users, but I have a unique perspective to offer. By the way, although you already have enough slow songs (and you may already have this one) I think "Forever Young" is a perfect song for a wedding!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7CuJ8cR9sg

You mentioned that you want people to dance. I would consider some of the current hits from today. At some recent public functions, I was surprised to see all of the 40 and 50 year old professionals up and dancing to modern day hip hop songs! I know you mentioned classic-rock songs, but I think you may be surprised at how all generations like certain pop songs. I also think these songs are more likely to get people up on the dance floor!

A few must haves are:

Kanye West - Stronger
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0tLN22mMlU

Kanye West - Touch The Sky ft. Lupe Fiasco
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF6gupack88

Knock You Down Keri Hilson Feat. Ne-Yo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3Q8FFckHYY

Neyo - So Sick (It's a slower dance song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYqDLwe0JJU

Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuEX_NC5hEc

OutKast - Hey Ya! (A CLASSIC!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ytxZdmSqr0

Watcha Say - Jason Derulo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buIUq7ZmYFA

Ridin' - Chamillionaire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR7-2MxNL7Y

Love train - O'Jays (A fun song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQvmCzILBfE

**I won't add all of her hits, but I strongly suggest looking into some of Lady Gaga's songs! They are sure to get people moving!

Especially: "Poker Face"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht8ZjuFzlUc

and "Bad Romance"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAoi_-_EVio

Here's a list of the current Top 40.

I hope I was able to help! Have fun at your wedding!

Thanks for the suggestions! I don't really listen to a lot of modern pop music, but you make a good point about throwing it in there. Hey-Ya was definitely one I though of, but forgot to write down, so I'm glad you reminded me, and some "Poker Face" may be in order too.

U2's "All I Want is You" is one of my favorite wedding songs. But I am a U2 fanatic. Its also a really long song and nice to make it the last song of the night.
