What songs should be on every iPod?

I'm looking for a list of songs that transcend generations, that everybody enjoys and that nobody ever gets sick of.

Let's see what type of list we can come up with.
Tip for best answer: M$0.95
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Black- Pearl Jam
Johnny B. Goode- Chuck Berry
Free Bird- Lynard Skynard
Ever Long- Foo Fighters
All I Want- The Offspring
The Kids Aren't Alright- The Offspring
Piano Man- Billy Joel
American Pie- Don McLean
Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen
The Space Between- Dave Matthews Band
With or Without You- U2
Iris- Goo Goo Dolls
Don't Stop Believin'- Journey
Talk- Cold Play
Yellow- Cold Play
Wouldn't It Be Nice- The Beach Boys
Lightning Crashes- Live
Imagine- John Lennon
Can't Help Falling in Love- Elvis Presley
Sweet Child O' Mine- Guns N' Roses
Hotel California- The Eagles
Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana
Stairway To Heaven- Led Zeppelin
Smooth Criminal-Michael Jackson
It's The End Of The World As We Know It- R.E.M.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

That's a pretty tall order!

Most of my music selection is "transcendence challenged", but I have a few tunes that I believe most others would enjoy as well. Here goes!
(Links open iTunes)

Aerosmith: Dream On (link to live version, though I prefer the original)

Bad Company: Shooting Star

Better than Ezra: A Lifetime

Creedence Clearwater Revival: Down on the Corner

Dixie Chicks: Not Ready to Make Nice

Elvis Presley: Don't Be Cruel

Eric Clapton: Wonderful Tonight

Eve 6: Inside Out

Foghat: Slow Ride

Green Day: When I Come Around

Hank Williams: So Lonesome I Could Cry

Harry Chapin: Cats in the Cradle
(30,000 pounds of bananas, Flowers are Red, for the kids)

John Mellencamp: Authority Song

Journey: Lights

Little Richard: Lucille or Tuttu Frutti

Nirvana: Oh Me

Queen: Crazy Thing Called Love

Rocco Deluca: Gift

Roy Orbison: In Dreams

Weezer: Say it Ain't So

Actually philipy, this was my non-transcendence challenged list...
Music is a tricky thing, everyone has their own tastes.

Ooops.... :)

Yes, there's not many things that absolutely everyone likes.

Yep... that list is "transcendence challenged". :)

The only thing on it that makes own my "essentials" list is Clapton's Wonderful Tonight.

Btw... I wasn't saying they were bad. Just not must-haves.

No worries! You can't always get what you want.. But if you try sometimes, you just might find you get what you need.

When searching for all-time great songs that I didn't know, I found a couple of lists really useful:

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/500songs
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/soldonsong/top100/top100_1.shtml

No one will love every single thing on them, but I'm sure everyone will discover some magical songs, including some that had their heyday before they were even born.

There's too many great ones there to mention my favorites, but to pick a few at random....

Imagine, John Lennon
Stairway To Heaven, Led Zeppelin
For What It's Worth, Buffalo Springfield
You Can't Always Get What You Want, The Rolling Stones
Losing My Religion, R.E.M.
Lola, The Kinks

EDIT:

Oh, talking of Lola... there is a song which certainly should *not* be on every iPod in the world.

But it should be on yours... and on those of all other sci-fi loving geeks....

I'm mostly into Indie music so it has an acquired taste. But I'll post anyway, just for the heck of it.

Headlight Disco - The Click Five
When I'm Gone - The Click Five
Red Light Warning Sign - Atomic Tom
Lights On - The Blackjacks
Unlucky Stars - Todd Wright
Christmas - Todd Wright
Down So Long - Getaway Car

Right now, these are the only bands/artists on my iPhone/iPod. I don't know if any of it would be of any interest to anyone but I would encourage you to at least take a listen. I put links to them in the source section.

Great question, Jeff (and one that will help me with my "Best Video Version Ever" contest/feature!) So many great answers already, too.

For now, I'll just add "With Or Without You", by U2. I'll try to come up with more this weekend.
