What snakes make good pets for first time owners?

What type of snake is a good pet for a young teen? Do Boas make good pets?

Boas do make good pets, but I would start off with something small like a grass snake just to make sure that the young teen keeps interest in them before going out and spending hundreds on a high end reptile.

You could probably even persuade the local group of 12 year old boys to go find you a grass snake for free or a plate of cookies...

Smaller breeds of snake, such as the corn snake, are good “starter snakes” for a person who is new to caring for reptiles. They are inexpensive and readily available, and are less high maintenance than some of the larger breeds, like boa constrictors.

Keep in mind, though, that “less high maintenance” does not mean that they aren’t still difficult to care for… because they are. It may seem like snakes are an easy pet to care for because they don’t require any play time. Snakes are very picky and require their habitat to be “just so” in order to thrive. Temperature and moisture levels must fall within a very specific range, and feeding them too often or too little will make them sick. You have to know how and when to handle them (for example, you shouldn’t handle a snake when it’s shedding).

In short, a snake might not be the best choice for a first pet.
