What small or medium sized dog breeds are good to run with?

I would probably recommend the North American Shepherd (mini Australian Shepherd) as well. Small and agile, I think one would be an excellent running partner.
Another possibility is the Beagle. Small and bred to run all day in packs for hunting.
I would caveat that the kids need to be dog-friendly -- I usually don't recommend small (under 30 lb) dogs for families with kids because they can get hurt easier. Jack Russells may be a bit too active and not kid-friendly.

M$Downside: the high energy. Especially as pups, they can make you nuts with their need for exercise. Cute little buggers, though.
Good luck on your search!
