What small or medium sized dog breeds are good to run with?

Looking for a small to medium dog breed that we can run 3-6 miles with at a moderate pace. Must be ~30 lbs or under. Ideally the dog is also very kid friendly.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00

One dog that came right to mind was the Parson Russell (Jack Russell) Terrier. These guys have a lot of energy and do well running beside horses.

I would probably recommend the North American Shepherd (mini Australian Shepherd) as well. Small and agile, I think one would be an excellent running partner.

Another possibility is the Beagle. Small and bred to run all day in packs for hunting.

I would caveat that the kids need to be dog-friendly -- I usually don't recommend small (under 30 lb) dogs for families with kids because they can get hurt easier. Jack Russells may be a bit too active and not kid-friendly.

The breeds that come to mind are Border Collie and Australian Shepherd. Neither are overly large, with males 30 - 45 lbs to be within breed standard. Females are 27 - 42 lbs. They're both high energy, smart, resilient breeds, good with kids in my experience. You'll probably not outrun them unless you take up ultra marathons.
Downside: the high energy. Especially as pups, they can make you nuts with their need for exercise. Cute little buggers, though.
Good luck on your search!

Australian Cattle Dogs are also a good choice. They love to run and they're good with kids. http://www.cattledog.com/misc/intro.html
