what skill that most people do not have but could benefit from mastering?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think a big skill that used to be taught in good schools for over 2000 years, but hasn't been taught on a general basis since at least the thirties, is logic. More recently "critical thinking skills" has become an educational buzzword, but real, Aristotelian logic is a nearly lost skill.

It's almost never taught at all in college, let along in jr. high or high school, the age group for which it was traditionally taught. You can tell. The media routinely engages in the Genetic Fallacy of attacking an argument by attacking who makes the argument. Politicians use that, and Red Herrings to obfuscate and draw attention away from whatever question they were asked. And very few people call them on it, ever. It's easy for those in the public eye to muddy the waters, when the public at large lacks the acquired skill of logic to clean them!

Logic isn't something for super-geeks. Anyone can learn it. It makes cutting through mental garbage and manipulation attempts so much easier. There are new logic curricula out there aimed at kids ages 12 and up. The best-known is probably The Fallacy Detective by Hans and Nathaniel Bluedorn. It's my 12-year-old's favorite subject.

I agree with your answer! Even more astonishing than people not being taught logical reasoning is that people are even being taught to actively not use their logic and reasoning abilities. It's insane.

All right, I will say that skills that most people could benefit from are writing skills.
To do a good essay, you must learn to outline. Learning outlining is a good way to learn the importance of organization. A successful essay is one that has a logical start, middle and end, and has logical reasoning so that you can convince your audience of the logic of your argument.
Writing usually causes one to do research and research usually broadens ones outlook on life. Just try to do research these days without being sidetracked on wikipedia.
It's difficult to write without stopping and thinking. Almost like listening. To yourself, and to the voices from the research that you have done, and to the voices of those who you are trying to reach, and those who will disagree with you.
One of the things that I have discovered from writing is how often, when putting my thoughts down on paper or on the screen, I modify my thinking because I have been forced by my slow rate of typing to reread what I have written and rethink my viewpoint.

The ability to relieve stress. People get so tense and stressed out, and it causes a lot of emotional and physical problems. If people would just learn to let things go life would be much more tolerable. Whether it's screaming into a pillow, getting a punching bag, taking a hot bath, whatever works for you. Stress is contagious.

A skill that I think many people dont have and would really benefit from is holding their tongues. Or at the very least thinking before they speak. Our society is so full of people that are so quick to judge. People who respond without giving thought to the consequences of what they say. I think if people would practice a little more patience and give things more thought before speaking or acting we would have a much better world to live in. We are all (myself included) so selfish that we only ever try to see things from our won perspective. Wanna master a skill? Try this: STOP AND THINK FIRST!

Fluent speaking of a foreign language. It is so helpful in nearly any field, but in America, we do not emphasize it. The problem is that you need work to keep it up.

I'm going to risk taking some negative feedback on this answer, I think my view on this is crucial and important.

I think this day in age and generation everyone is born with a _dominant sense_, weather it be a sense of smell, touch, hearing, sight or even taste.

Much like you might see in a movie where the superhero has a heightened sense that gives them a edge.
People all around us are all superheros in a sense.

I believe that if people stop trying to be good at just one thing and broaden their horizons with many DIFFERENT hobbies, trades and daily activities thus identifying that sense ; not only would the world be a better place but I think more people would have a deeper self confidence in themselves and have a better outlook on life.

And if they start to master that heightened sense they may find themselves among the company of artisans and PHD's of the world in the future.

Kind Regards,
XDS

Robert Heinlein predicted long ago that, in an age of specialization, the world would have a great need for the generalist.
