What should you look for when buying a new bicycle?

I haven't had a bike since I was a little girl, but I'd like to start riding to save gas. What are things I need to look for or avoid?
Tip for best answer: M$1.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The size of the wheels. You want to be able to stand up on the bicycle without having to stand on your tip-toes. So make sure you can stand up on the back flat-footed.

Another thing is the brand. Make sure they haven't had any recalls or check consumer reports to make sure it's a good bike to purchase. I lived in Santa Monica for a short time and bikes were stolen there a lot. So what I did was buy a folding bike to keep in my apartment. So another thing to consider is where are you going to store you bicycle?

Hope that helps.

"""There are lots of factors that effect how a bike feels, tyres have quite a large effect, heavier, fatter, softer tyres with a more pronounced tread pattern will make a bike feel more sluggish than lighter, harder tyres with little or no tread. Frame geometry and stiffness, a more flexible frame with """"lazier"""" angles won't feel as sharp as something stiffer with quicker steering. Then there's the overall weight of the bicycle, while a couple of pounds either way might not make a huge difference to performance, unless your racing, it can effect the way a bike feels, particularly when climbing or accelerating.

Well,I would like to suggest you to check once the range of Hero Cycles as I found them better than the other brands of same price range.
