What should unwanted personal promotions over social networks be called?

Unwanted email is called SPAM. Unwanted email you signed up for is called BACN. Figured out a good name for unwanted self-promotions from friends in social networks!
Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Following the same line of reasoning, wouldn't unwanted self-promotion be HAM?

It should be called Spam. Because spam covers all the unwanted online promotion basis.

SLAG. I just like the sound of it. It implies that it is a useless by-product, and could easily be a forced-acronym. Let's see...

Stop Lamers! Abolish Garbage!
Stop Letting Assholes Gloat

Why not just spam?

According to dictionary.com "spam" is "a disruptive, esp. commercial message posted on a computer network or sent as e-mail".

Following the pork product theme I would initially say "RIND", but some people think the rind is the best bit.

How about "trotters" - picture a little anthropomorphic pig jumping up and down waving a foreleg in the air going "me me me!"

I think the suggestion on http://www.bacn2.com/ that the next term in the chain is "Sausage" also has merit :D (As in "Put it away!")

what about WASTE?

since they are wasting your time, bandwidth, internet resources, their time, and because in the end if they keep doing it they waste a friendship and their image.

Stop the WASTE!

community spam
advertising by invasion
wealth unbuilding
friendship pollution
bullying into buying
progressive defriending
ingenious influence dumping
profuse ad diarrhea
toxic team trimming
terrific tastlessness
full sink living
dream ramming
delightful boredom generator
gold flapjack recipes
bakin your own bakin
sharing inanities
lazy selling
me as goalsetting
the empty drum makes the most noise
garbage reframing
social junkification

but maybe what you need
is not really fun terminology
but to spend less time
in social networking as it is now,
because although "social"
implies interpersonal
relationships, the word
"networking" can be
interpreted in many ways.
Do you maybe need a new
place to spend time in,
and what would that be
called?
personal friendship and non-commercial collaborative environments?
and what would such a place be like?
and would it really be as much fun without anything or anyone
to complain about?
