What should I major in if I'm interested in Web Design, Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, etc.? D:?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you want to design book covers, web sites, charts, ads, etc., a major in Graphic Design would be good. You want one that focuses on the artistic aspect (painting, photography) as much as the computer aspect (Photoshop, Illustrator, Dream Weaver). You'll want a fine arts school more than a tech school.

If you want to make movies (Wall-E, Jurassic Park), you might look in the the Digital Production Arts Masters degree at Clemson University. Their graduates are at every major studio, and a friend of mine even won an award for her work on the Golden Compass (see below). Another friend of mine talked about the amount of time during his summer internship that he worked on Aslan's mane.

If you want to make video games (Halo 3, etc.), a major in Computer Science with a focus on graphics would work. You'll need to be good at math. Get ready to learn some OpenGL.

My sister makes a fantastic living as a graphic designer for the government with a B.S. in graphic design. Maybe you could start with a graphic designer major, Computer Science minor. (My major was CS.) Then if you still want to and have the time/money, you could get that Digital Production Arts M.S. You'd be qualified to do just about anything. As you see from my picture above, my friend Rachel Drews (who is more artist than computer scientist) does quite well for herself with her DPA degree.

Your answer has helped me a lot, but only makes me wonder what exactly do I want to do in the future? I feel as if I'm interested in the art aspects mostly, but then again I want to take it to a whole different level. I wouldn't mind doing any of the suggested, I just don't know which or what. I kind of figured all of it could actually connect with one another.

If you have the choice, the time, and the ambition, I would suggest Computer Science, as this is the strongest degree. It will make you competitive with others in the computer industry. Graphic Design is comparatively easy compared to "web design," and is something you could master very quickly with a copy of Photoshop and a Photoshop for Dummies book. Perhaps if you wanted to take graphic design to the next level, you could take some classics at a community college or a skill/learning center.

Computer Graphics, this sounds more like video games to me; you can go to places like ITT tech, Digital Media Arts College, or Full Sail. Again, this is more of a skill certificate than a college degree.

This is just my opinion, but of all of these, a comp sci degree and a career in web development is the most concrete approach, and will give you the greatest chance of long term success and the most flexibility.

If you want to be a good graphic designer, you have to be an artist first, and "for Dummies" books won't get you there. I know how to use Photoshop and how to design web pages, but they never have the professional flare a true artist adds.

I agree with srgothard. Books and programs are no substitute for artistic talent. Graphic designers have been fighting this misconception since the first Mac was sold. I know because I'm married to one.
