What should I know when buying an iPhone for use outside the U.S.?

I know iPhones are used outside the U.S. but can I buy one in the US for use in another country on that country's carrier? What do I need to know to do this?
Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The truth is if you buy an iPhone in the US when you go abroad it will work without you having to change sims because the networks in those other countries automatically allow the iPhone to connect to them but there is a very big downside to this. It's called roaming but the cost of roaming is very large.

Please note that AT&T does not actually own any cell towers in the other countries rather it pays money to existing carriers in those countries to allow their customers to use them.

On the other hand you can jailbreak your device and perform an unlock. Although recently it was declared that jailbreaking is legal it does void your warranty. But if you do a full restore Apple can't tell that you have jailbroken your device.

You can however buy an unlocked iPhone which doesn't need to be hacked. If you an iPhone from Apple in the UK you can then use any Sim that you want. This is the best option. You may be able to get an unlocked phone imported into the US but I don't know whether it is easy or not.

If you can buy an unlocked iPhone I think that is your best bet and then use any Sim that you want.

You can use the link in the source to find out how much it would cost to use your phone in over 220 countries.

Hope that helps :D

I will have to research the jailbreak/unlock option. I see many people using them and am sure they are not paying the $2 a minute the ATT site shows. Thanks for the info.

Unless you have the iPhone jailbroken, it will only work on AT&T. AT&T has towers in many other countries, so this is why other countried have the iPhone. In fact, AT&T is the only carrier in some countries. Remember that the iPhone is an AT&T brand phone.

You can buy an iPhone in any country. All you need to do is contact AT&T if you are heading overseas with it so taht they can send a mini program for you to download that will allow towers in otehr countries to accept your phone. Some people have said that it automatically downloads the program once you get into Europe if you do not have it, but I would contact AT&T to just make sure.

Thanks. To my knowledge, AT&T is not here but even if they were I would not want to pay the $2 a min for the call. I will look into the jailbreak option.

Yes, we can buy the iphone here in Croatia. It ONLY costs 1.200 euro's. But if you buy it with paying the phone each month, it works out you pay 70 euro's a month (another small fortune) and you pay forever! I have considered buying a phone in Britain, and having a friend bring it over, but am also worried it won't work here, so will wait and see what happens next.
