I recommend going somewhere that has a tv and watch the ball drop.

Well, I can only share with you what turned out to be the ABSOLUTE best New Years eve I ever had...we were flying to PR for vacation and had a Terrible trip; lost the car rental, bad luggage, horrid flight, one problem after another. It was so late when we finally got out of the airport and able to find a car that we couldn't make it to our original destination so booked a last minute room at a local but quaint and clean paradore (sp??). It was a rural area - no TV's or phones in the main areas....just a guy with a guitar, some great food and a warm breeze. We sat under a tree listening to the sound of little frog's [coqui's - not sure how to spell], sipping parcha juice [not sure what it is but it's really delicious...i think it is passio fruit juice?] and slow dancing now and then. total there were probably less than 20 couples - the music was nice, the food was great, the weather was warm...no hassle, no crowds, no rush, no hurry. pure relaxation.

so-in a nutshell. find a quiet place and spend it with the one you love [or at least like]. get away from it all...

I highly recommend doing a "midnight run" if they have them in your area.

(note: if you tell us where you are we can help more!)

I'd recommend inviting people over to your house, staying at home, calling cabs for all, and getting super wasted. Call the cabs early (11:45) or pull out some spare beds. Then have a blast.

I know this is obvious and normal but good Champagne should at least come out for New Year's. (I actually think sparkling wine is vastly under-appreciated year-round and its a shame that so many bad tasting alcoholic beverages are so much more socially acceptable generally).

Also being around friends or family is essential. So calling a taxi as early as possible is important, unless people are just going to sleep over which is even safer. Hungover drivers are dangerous but not as dangerous as drunk drivers.

My suggestion is, if possible, be with at least 10 people. That's what makes it the most fun, be around more than just a few people (friends and family of course, people that you like). It would be ideal to have a nice wide screen TV to watch the ball drop on, have a variety of snacks and drinks (based on your preferences) and a few activities for your guests such as board games or any other games (assuming that you would be hosting the party). Music is always good! Just no drama, please. Haha
