What should I do about this?

I have a friendly neighbor who ( remote ) starts both his cars (a minivan and a midsize) around around 6.30-7 am rain or shine and keeps it on idle until they leave for work by around 7.30- 8am.

Should I tell him it's a bad idea to keep the cars idling that long? if so, how should I tell him?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My guess is that he's not doing it to warm up his engine really. He just wants the car nice and toasty when he gets in to leave for work or wherever.

As such, I wouldn't go out of my way to tell him. But, if you were in friendly conversation and somehow the subject came up, you could tell him. Just don't act like you're superior for knowing it. Tell him you just read it in an article and that you're not positive about it but he should look into it. If he corroborates your comment with independent research (or by going to Mahalo Answers), he will be more likely to listen to the advice.

If you want your car warm when you leave in the morning, the best option is to park in the garage, but I realize that's not an option for everyone.

- not sure, because he does it even during warm weather.

For your own reference, there are a number of engine warming devices you can install in your engine. I have used many of them. By stating the cost comparison between these options and idling the engine, then you can approach your neighbor with new information.

Good luck!
