What should I consider when buying an iPod touch for a teenager?

Are there particular features which are optional or attachments I should get also? What do I need to know before shopping?
Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1. How big his/her music library is. There's no point getting an iPod touch that can't fit all the teens music etc.

2. Definitely get a 3rd or 4th Generation - The reason for this is that Apple has started leaving out features out of older models. For example I have an iPod Touch 2nd Generation and it can't multitask, have a custom background or wirelessly print using Airprint while the 3rd and 4th Generation iPod Touches can. If you can get the 4th generation I recommend it as Apple used a faster processor and put a camera in it so you can video chat using FaceTime. See video about FaceTime (It's heartwarming).

3. Will you be paying for Apps or will they. If you are then make sure to disable or make them aware of in app purchases as people have got hefty bills after buying things within apps. See source for news story.

Hope that helps. Happy buying :D

Good info, thanks. I wondered the difference in the generations but had not compared them. The apps point is a good one too, though for now he is pretty good about asking about anything he is doing to do. That could certainly change with age and independence.

If you can, I would suggest waiting. There is a lot of talk about the iPad II coming out sometime in the spring. If this ends up being true, Craigslist will be filled with iPads as people get rid of the old model to get the new one.

Of course, they would not be wise to announce a new iPad right before Christmas as that would cut into the current sales. I would expect an official announcement by the end of January if there is going to be a new iPad coming out this year.
