What should I buy my Grandparents for Christmas?

They never want anything and they already have everything.
Tip for best answer: M$2.00

Older persons will generally appreciate something pratical rather than something frivilous. Something that makes their life easier as they get older is also appreciated.

How about a Roomba (robotic vacuum). It would save them the work of vacuuming and every time they use it they will think of you. (which will be often).

Also, I'd stay away from gift certificates. I've found older persons think it's just a cop-out for putting real thought into gifts. And besides, why exchange perfectly good cash thats good anywhere for specialized cash good at only one place.

LCD picture frames are a good idea. You can add pictures every time you visit too.

Not sure which, but some frames can be updated remotely.

This is a great gift idea. I'd encourage you to look for one that integrates with Flickr by displaying any photos tagged with a key word. Make up a word for a unique tag and share it with your family. Any time one of them uploads a photo they'd like to automatically share with Grandma and Grandpa, they apply the unique tag. The grandparents get new photos automatically and effortlessly.

If you have a bit of time and some hobbyist tendencies, you can build your own. - http://www.lumis.com/picture/homemade_flickr_photo_frame/692/

I recommend the Just5 cell phone. There is no better thing you can give them but independence, security, and peace of mind this season. This phone comes with PERS features that can call for help in their behalf in just a press of a button. The phone is also perfect for seniors with it simple design, basic functions, and other senior-friendly features including large keys, bright display, and amplified sound. I found this phone at www.just5.com.

Pajama sets are always fun!

How about a VHS/DVD combo recorder? They must have plenty of VHS tapes lying around. This is very handy. You would probably want to include a bundle of blank DVD's, but I think the gift would be something they would appreciate and use.

If they're comfortable using the Internet (some grandparents aren't), a subscription to Audible would be great. Seniors who may remember the great days of radio drama may enjoy sitting back to listen to a story from time to time.

great idea! I remember that my grandfather enjoyed listening to audio books when his vision decreased. This was in the late 70s and audio books were on tape.

Generally what grandparents want is more grandkids though i'm not sure in your situation this is possible but that is what mine said. It is still a good answer. A more practical answer would be "pictures" of grandkids, you, or someone they love and i wouldn't use something that is technologically superior than their generation. Make up a story of pictures so that this can in a way serve as "time" that they could indirectly spend with you in your life of the past year like in an album (and be sure to leave blank pages at the end). Scanning and color copying tools are pretty easy and cool. Then keep it going. My grandmother loved spending the day looking at them, it was like she was with me. Every week or two, mail her some new pictures for the year and celebrate again with the start of a new one. You can also start storing them on a page like this example so that they can print or check them out if they are technologically savvy. So you could give them and only them a web page. Many older folks have computers but nothing to use them for.

Anything personalized, a blanket or throw for the couch, a pillow that has the grandparent's poem on it.
Are they spiritual- pick a psalm and have it printed out on a beautiful piece of parchment and a nice frame.
There is a lot of options with personalization ( I like the scrap book idea too), or invite them to a sporting event where you or other of their grandchildren are playing.

Everyone seems to like picture frames... Depending on how much cash you have to spend I still think a gift card would be ideal but if you're looking to splurge get them a vacation! Something local is fine. Get them out of their regular routine and add some excitement.

Digital frame loaded with bunches of good pictures!

Gift certificate for you to go out to eat with them--they probably would like to do this more than going out alone. Restaurant.com currently has a sale for 80% off their gift certificates, which are normally $10 for a $25 gift certificate anyway!

Grandparents should get something they can enjoy - most of all, your time. Get them a gift certificate to a nice comfy restaurant they'd like, and tell them you will go with them.

Grandparents always seem to collect stuff, so if they like frogs or dogs or golf stuff or hedgehogs, whatever, you can use some small related items as filler.

Tell them their present is to go with them out of town or maybe a nearby beach, historical monument, tourist town, you know. Give them a day on the town.

Put a scrapbook together for them with photos of your entire family (those related to them, of course). Grandparents are most proud of you and family.

Your grandmother may LOVE a simple day-spa package (hairstyle, manicure, pedicure, all that jazz).

Again, time with family or anything made by small children in the family will melt their hearts (at least Grandma). Maybe Grandpa just needs a pipe or a new sweater. They are generally easier to please.

Grandpa says, " I am more interested in your love, company and attention than in any material object you can give."

I would rather have you spend an afternoon with me or invite me to your house for dinner and engage me in honest, sincere conversation than for you spend money on me no matter how much thought you put into selecting the gift.

Grandparents are the most difficult people to buy for in my opinion. You may not see them all the time to know what they want or what they need. They may have everything you could imagine the want. I generally just go online to places that I know will give me some good ideas for gifts.

If your Grandparents are like mine, they seem to already have everything they need, making them so hard to buy for. I started a thing last year where all of the Grandkids got together and each chose a cause that they believe in and donated a certain amount of money. Some examples are: ASPCA or animal rescues, Habitat For Humanity, a local Church or food pantry, etc. Then we each made a homemade card on my computer describing who we donated our money to in honor of our Grandparents and why we chose this cause. It actually made both of my Grandparents cry when they saw all of the cards and read what we had done. It was extra special because we each had donated to a place that was important to us personally, like I donated to a Labrador Breed Rescue and my Grandparents know how much I love animals, while my brother donated to a fund for police officers hurt on the job because he is a police officer. It would be something different!

This is tough to answer as "grandparents" vary in age, lifestyle and personalties.

As previous answers have suggested, photos are always good. Assuming they have a DVD player, making a DVD of photos of you and other family members, would be a great way that even "non tech savvy" people could enjoy the pictures.

Another great gift idea is a "luxury" that they wouldn't buy for themselves. I have used the Fruit of the Month Club with great success for older relatives--there's a "light size" version that is perfect for smaller households.

One of the best presents I've ever given my mother in her senior years was a gift certificate to Cracker Barrel restaurant. She was on a fixed income and one thing she missed was being able to invite family and friends out to eat. I made sure the gift certificate was large enough that she could pay for a table of people. The great thing about Cracker Barrel is that it's home style that almost all seniors love. And they have a fun store where she could spend any left over money that she had. It was a huge hit with her and probably the most appreciated gift that I ever gave her.

Do they like gardening? Why not a tree, shrub, rosebush or gardening equipment. I bought my Mum a rosebush for several years for the communal gardens around her apartment block and the gardeners found a place for them. She is sadly gone now, but the other residents will be able to enjoy them for years to come.

It was very enjoyable to be able to go with her to the garden centre and pick out the plant that she wanted. For Christmas Day (or her birthday or whatever the occasion) I simply created a little gift certificate on my PC that promised her the outing. The garden centre we visited had a lovely restaurant, so we would have lunch or a cream tea to make the day extra special.

How about a digital picture frame? If you spend a little time with creating a nice slide show with pictures of their loved ones, it will be the best gift they got in a long time. There's a vast variety of picture frames available.

Two things to keep in mind:

- the resolution of the display should be at least 640 x 480 pixels or greater

- operating the picture frame should be fool-proof. Grandparents usually don't understand the concept of a graphical user interface with menus and dialog boxes. The picture frame should start up showing the slide show by pressing just one button.
