What should I buy first for my guitar: a capo or a strap?

I only plan to buy one of the two items right now, and I was wondering which item has a higher priority...

Thanks

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Definitely a capo. Especially if you're a beginner or intermediate guitar player, I would go with a capo. A strap is useful only when you play live. You do not need a strap for jam sessions, practice sessions, songwriting, or singing. A capo on the other hand allows for you to change the key of a song to your comfort zone for singing. This is crucial if you want to start off with covers or write your own music. Also, many beginner songs require capos. Hope this was insightful.

Just off the cuff I'd say the capo. The ability to switch between keys swiftly is crucial in guitar playing, which is what a capo allows you to do. A strap is certainly important, but having a capo will allow you to play songs that otherwise you'd be unable to play.

Definitely buy the strap first. It's a necessity, especially if you want to play standing up. A capo, however, is an accessory, and although it's nice to have, it's probably not something you'll use everyday, unless you plan on doing a lot of songs that have to be transposed from one key to another.

I feel that it really depends on what you're planning on doing. If you are going to play out with a band, you should get a strap, but if you are just planning on learning to play, or playing higher-end songs/compositions, get the capo.
