What should everyone know about HIV?
Are Americans pretty well educated on the facts of HIV? Are there any new studies about HIV and AIDS that people need to know about? Are the experimental drugs for AIDS working any better than they did 10 years ago?

Hi @kingpin, there is a lot of information spread by the media about HIV, both only a few people have genuine information about the disease. Here are some important things everyone should know about HIV infection:
*HIV infection is caused by a virus known as human immunodeficiency virus.
*Not all HIV infections lead to AIDS. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is the final stage of the HIV infection. If a person with HIV gets treated earlier, the infection may not reach that stage
*HIV can be passed from one person to the other through unprotected sexual relation, sharing needles and any sharp objects.
*HIV can be passed from a mother to her unborn child during pregnancy and birth. It can also be passed through breast-feeding.
*HIV can be treated by the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), but this drugs only help to decrease the replication of the virus. Therefore a person under treatment should avoid having sexual contact with healthy persons.
*HIV cannot be spread through casual contact, such as hugging, touching, handshake or kissing.
