What should Detroit do? Keep letting houses sell for $600 or tear them down and start over with farms?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25

oh. that hurts.

I did hear about that in some places owners are tearing down new houses that weren't selling.

Seriously, how wasteful. I have no idea. But if someone owns something, and it is not against any law, they can legally do anything they want.

In other opinions, it could be morally, ethically, or materially wastefully, WRONG.

The only thing I can see in their views is that the houses are unwanted, it costs them insurance money to keep them, they are being broken into, or vandalized, so security is a problem. It is very complex.

You have no idea how bad it is. They are really selling older houses in some areas for as little as $600, many many are going for under $4,000. There are squatters and or course all the bad news you can imagine. the wild animals, foxes, coyote, deer etc. are returning to the city.

You r answer was pretty much off the cuff, but I appreciate you trying.

I am sure you are well meaning. I don't feel it is fair to say "I have no idea how bad it is" and "your answer is off the cuff". I am financially supporting 2 young people who are out of work, and several 25 year olds of friends have returned home. the parents are in crisis, too, supporting them. So, while I don't know everything, I do feel the pain for these people. I live it. Not to emphasize myself, but I was nearly fatally injured (or killed) by someone who ran into us about a year ago. Thank you, but I don't feel my reply was trite. The entire housing situation shocks me. I live in it. Just not in Detroit. We are all working hard together to make it better here. Hope others can too

For anyone still reading this page, the reason I said Krysstel's answer was "off the cuff" is because she answered without doing any research. And my question was not about tearing down new houses that don't sell, which is what her answer addressed. Nor did she answer the question which was sell them cheap or demolish and build farms on the land? The Detroit situation is far beyond just a housing issue. I picked her answer as best because it was the only answer and I was disappointed the question was of so little interest to the Mahalo Community. I was hoping for some real feedback on the issue of how to use the land best, old houses or farming.

I just read Matt's comment. Matt, you are probably (unfortunately) very right on this. Anything so very serious, takes a very long time to rebuild. The vacant houses, squatters, wild animals in houses ayala_zed, reminds me of my days in working to find housing for migrant workers. It is a very serious issue. Thank you. Respectfully submitted. :)

Detroit was always in really bad shape. And despite common belief, the economy will not improve any time soon. The future of Detroit is not looking bright. At all.
