What setup is more productive? 46 inch Samsung LCD or 2 Dell 24 inch monitors?

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm a big fan of a lot of monitors. In fact, at Mahalo we have an "unlimited monitors" policy. Folks have 2-3 monitors as a rule of thumb, and the most common setups are generally 2-3 24" monitors.

It's better to have multiple monitors because you can maximize applications in multiple windows. With one monitor you can only maximize one window... with three you can quickly maximize three.

Also, the 24" Dell monitors that flip on their side are super cheap now... just buy three of those and call it a day.

I tried using a 45 LCD and it was way too tall. I found it hurt to look up all of the time.

I like the idea of 3 24 Dells. Do you have an opinion on the Dell S2409W Full HD Monitor

Samsung's are notorious for breaking plus Dell monitors are more reliable. I would go with the duel, its much easier to navigate plus too clearly see a 46" screen are gonna have to been at least 3-4' back. If you are planning on watching alot of video not doing work, go with the big screen.

Depends what you are doing with the PC.

If you are multi-tasking - IE running a browser, checking emails, running IM clients at the same time, then I find that multiple monitors is useful. I have a separate monitor next to my main 22" one that only has my Windows Live Messenger displayed on it, and occasionally TweetDeck.

However, if you are usually running a single application that you want extra detail on (graphics etc), then a 42" may be easier.

I find it useful being able to drag-and-drop across monitors, easily using the maximise/shrink tools, however organising multiple windows on a single monitor is difficult in my experience

I can report that I have seen a major contractor use the two monitor setup. He uses a electronic board that is connected to his computer to draw his plans. One monitor is used to show the plans. The other monitor contains pricing and other windows.
He uses something called QuickBid and OnScreen Takeoff.

It depends what you mean by "productive." The size of a 46 inch monitor is far bigger than two 24 inch monitors. So if you're looking at just pure size and how much you can fit on the screen, you're better off with that.

However, if you're looking to do work on it on your computer, it might just be too overwhelming. Two smaller monitors are easier to handle, and if I'm looking at a solution for my computer, I'd pick the two 24 inchers.
