What science-related book should I read next?

I'm looking for something along the lines of Brian Greene's The Fabric of the Cosmos or The Elegant Universe. I read Leonard Susskind's The Black Hole War, and it was too elementary. I want something in-depth but without too many equations. I'm interested in most branches of science, but theoretical physics is by far my favorite.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Some promising looking selections that I found surfing around the http://www.amazon.com store site. Check further information on the site to see which ones suit you the best.

Anathem by Neal Stephenson
"2009 Hugo Award Nominee"
Review Excerpt:
"Anathem" is a work of Hard SF, meaning that everything that's weird or new in it is a rigorous extrapolation of science, mathematics and philosophy. It's the kind of book Arthur C. Clarke used to write in the 40's and 50's. He wrote about rockets and satellites because scientists were working on rockets and satellites."

Turn of the Century: 2100 (Hardcover)
by Charlie Pedersen
Review Excerpts: "Fascinating book!"
"Wow, I never knew science could be so entertaining"
"Mr. Pedersen appears to have a strong grasp of the science, behind his story. His use of facts and places make this thriller come alive."
"Turn of the Century 2100 is a sci-fi based international suspense about what happens when a Berkeley, California quantum physics lab, and 12 other labs around the world are visited by a "photon probe" ,an "electro-magnetic wave" state entity in a hologram, from a Geneva Switzerland physics lab from the year 2108."

The Science in Science Fiction: 83 SF Predictions that Became Scientific Reality (Hardcover)
by Robert Bly
Review Excerpt:
"Science fiction fans and technology buffs will treasure this guide to the sci-fi ideas that have influenced and inspired scientific advances in the real world. Many of the most fascinating ideas in science originated not in the laboratory but in the minds of such science fiction writers as Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury."

QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter (Princeton Science Library) (Paperback)
by Richard P. Feynman
Review Excerpt:
"Celebrated for his brilliantly quirky insights into the physical world, Nobel laureate Richard Feynman also possessed an extraordinary talent for explaining difficult concepts to the general public. Here Feynman provides a classic and definitive introduction to QED (namely quantum electrodynamics), that part of quantum field theory describing the interactions of light with charged particles. Using everyday language, spatial concepts, visualizations, and his renowned "Feynman diagrams" instead of advanced mathematics, Feynman clearly and humorously communicates both the substance and spirit of QED to the layperson."

A Briefer History of Time (Paperback)
by Stephen Hawking (Author), Leonard Mlodinow (Author)
Review Excerpt
"Hawking's A Brief History of Time, published in 1988, was a surprise best-seller but a tough read for most people who tackled it. Hawking received many requests for a version that would make his discussion of deep questions about the universe more accessible. This book does that. Hawking and Mlodinow, a physicist turned science writer, proceed by small and careful steps from the early history of astronomy to today's efforts to construct a grand unified theory of the universe."

Dr. Kaku is one of my personal favorites. His latest book, Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the world of phasers, force fields, teleportation, and time travel, would certainly be a worthwhile read. It just made #10 on the NY best seller's list.

If you would like to directly ask Dr. Kaku a question visit http://mkaku.org/home/?page_id=625. He is on ScIQ every Sunday from 8 - 11 p.m.

P.S. Have you viewed "What the bleep: Down the Rabbit Hole"? I love this stuff!!!

Not sure if this fits exactly in the category you are looking for, but a scientist friend of mine co-authored a book with the former president of Tokyo University called :

Vision 2050: Roadmap for a sustainable earth.

Quote from the preface:
"This book will show how – by virtue of science and technology – we can create an infrastructure for conserving energy and recycling materials by the year 2050.
Furthermore, this book will show how that infrastructure will put us on the path towards maintaining high standards of living without depleting the earth’s resources or despoiling the environment."

You can find it on Amazon here

or you can download it from SpringerLink here
