What role do stereotypes play in the book East of Eden?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to Sparknotes, one way stereotypes play a role in East of Eden is through the character of Lee. Lee is a Chinese-American cook and housekeeper Adam hires in Chapter 15. "Lee confides in Samuel that he likes being a servant because it enables him to control his master. Lee says that, although he has lived in America all his life, he uses pidgin English—sentences such as “Me talkee Chinese talk”—to play into Americans' stereotypes and expectations of him."

Hope this helps!
