The resolution of a digital camera is determined by the resolution of the sensor. images that may be compressed or not compressed depending on the camera software. You cannot increase the resolution of an image on the camera or on the computer.
A camera with 6 megapixels is roughly equal to a 35mm film camera. A camera with 12 megapixels is roughly equal to a 4 inch by 5-inch color transparency. The real question is how big do you want to print? A 12-megapixel camera will print a 30” by 40” print full frame. Although you cannot change the resolution, you can crop and enlarge the image on the computer. The more you crop and enlarge the more danger you have of pixilation in the final image. The more resolution you have to start with, the more you can crop and enlarge your images.
