There are two leagues and three divisions in each league. To qualify for the playoffs in MLB, a team must finish first in their division. Another way to make the playoffs is to qualify as a wild card team. This is the team with the best record in each league that is not a divisional winner. If two teams tie for the wild card at the end of the 162 game schedule, a one game playoff will determine the wild card winner. If there is a tie for the divison there is also a one game playoff, unless both teams are guaranteed to make the playoffs (one the division winner and one the wild card) despite the outcome of an additional game. The division winner is then the team with the best head to head seasonal record. If there is still a tie, then the team with the better record against divisional opponents makes the playoffs. In the unlikely event that there is still a tie, then the team with the best record in the last 81 games makes the playoffs.
