He was apparently considered an infidel in his day and the church was attacking him when he wrote the following statement, which is engraved on the Jefferson Memorial in Washington: "The returning good sense of our country threatens abortion to their hopes, & they clergy believe that any portion of power confided to me, will be exerted in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly; for I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. But this is all they have to fear from me: & enough too in their opinion, & this is the cause of their printing lying pamphlets against me. . ." He felt any control over a man's mind, including religion controlling through fear, was a form of tyranny.

"The religious views of Thomas Jefferson diverged widely from the orthodox Christianity of his day. Throughout his life Jefferson was intensely interested in theology, biblical study, and morality.91 He is most closely connected with the Episcopal Church, the religious philosophy of Deism, and Unitarianism."
It's no secret that many of our founding fathers weren't religious. Many think they were Atheists, but they weren't. They (i.e. George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson) merely felt it was a man's choice what he wanted to believe in. They made sure and put in the constitution that a separation of church and state is necessary because when there is not a separation of church and state, one particular religion or church is favored at other's expense. And this, my dear children, is a basic Free Mason belief.
This country was NOT built on Christian values. This country was built on the idea of individual freedom, the freedom to think for yourself and choose your own faith, not Christian values. Anyone who tells you different doesn't know their history.
