what proof do we have that dark matter exists

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

While no one knows quite what dark matter *is*, there is now some fairly convincing astronomical evidence that it exists and is not normal matter.

The first observation that I heard about was about 3 years ago. In a massive collision of two galactic clusters, the normal matter was swept up by the collision, leaving dark matter behind. Basically, there is a region adjacent to the glowing gas and dust left from the collision where there is gravitational lensing, but no other evidence of the presence of normal matter. This is taken as strong evidence for the existence of dark matter.

There have been a couple of other similar observations since. Link goes to a news article about the original work.

The "proof" relates to the fact that the observed motions of distant astronomical objects do not correspond to the calculated motions according to general relativity.

While the existence of dark matter could explain this difference, there is no proof that dark matter exists. There are multiple other possible explanations for the differences.
