Being located in the deep south and being a historically black college, Florida A&M; does pop up a lot as being at the forefront of civil rights activity.
The event that comes up a lot seems to be a 1956 bus boycott that took place after students Carrie Patterson and Wilhemina Jakes were arrested for sitting in the white section of a bus. The local Tallahassee community rallied around the students' boycott to the extent that people were getting arrested en-masse for giving rides to protesters. Tallahassee jails were overflowing when the Supreme Court ruled that the similar bus segregation taking place in Montgomery, Alabama, was unconstitutional.
