YouTube, like many other social media sites, has indeed had their share of copyright infringement pains also known as legal battles, due to content. The biggest lawsuit against YouTube, whose parent company is Google, was filed in 2007 when they were sued by the telecommunications giant Viacom. The allegations stated that YouTube purposely hosted content that infringed on Viacom’s copyrights and the sum of the lawsuit was for a whopping $1 Billion!! Now when was the last time you saw anyone get into this much trouble over the internet?
On June 23, 2010 Federal Judge Louis Stanton dismissed the lawsuit against YouTube. The motion was granted stating YouTube was protected under the DMCA, (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), against what Viacom stated was copyright infringement.
