What prescription drugs are most commonly abused?
Does it include opioids such as codeine, oxycodone, and morphine? Are central nervous system (CNS) depressants such as barbiturates and benzodiazepines one of the most commonly abused prescription drugs? What are the stimulant drugs that are commonly misused?

There are three categories of prescription medications that are commonly abused. Here I will give you a list and a run down of their effects.
1. Opoids, Narcotics, and Pain Relievers
- This is the most widely abused category of prescription medicines. Medicines in this category include Lortab, Lorcet, Dilaudid, Tylox, Vicodin, and Percocet. These medicines are only prescribed as pain relievers for moderate to severe pain. They are commonly sold on the street for a low price and are easily accessible to children. They are depressants and are commonly mixed with alcohol to increase their effects.
2. Benzodiazepines, Tranquilizers, Barbituates, Sedatives-
- These medicines are Valium, Xanax, Librium, Clonopin, and Ativan. These drugs are like the opoid category in that they are depressants. They are taken therapeutically for anxiety, and depressive disorders. When abused they are taken for the "high" that can be achieved from taking a high dose of them.
3. Stimulants
- These are typically prescribed for persons with ADD or ADHD and are a central nervous system stimulant. They are amphetamines and that makes them extremely dangerous when not taken as prescribed. The drugs in this category are Adderall, Ritalin, and Concerta. These drugs are seen a lot with college and high school aged persons.
