What place shall I visit in Venice when I am staying there only one day?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It has a few things near it that you can check out. The Doge Palace (http://www.italyguides.it/us/venice_italy/doge_s_palace/doge_s_palace.htm) I would highly recommend getting a guided tour as the history of the place is pretty interesting. The Campanile (which you can go up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Mark%27s_Campanile) A famous tea house that's been there since 1720 (http://www.caffeflorian.com/) The place is ridiculously expensive but a nice splurge because it has such a lovely atmosphere. There's also the famous church, the Basilica di San Marco, which you can go inside. The Museum of Archeology is also in the square.
Furthermore, the famous Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto Bridge are not far away.
I wouldn't spend my entire day visiting museums etc. Walking around Venice itself is a treat. DO NOT FORGET TO BRING A MAP. Venice is very easy to get lost in.
If you are looking for an off-beaten place to check out, the first ghetto is actually in Venice. (http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venice_ghetto.htm)
I would also recommend that you try to go during Carnavale, where people dress up in elaborate costumes. There are many activities and concerts that happen during this time as well. http://www.carnivalofvenice.com/area.asp?id=4
In terms of food, definitely eat seafood, it's what they are most famous for! Try to find places in the deeper corners. The food is cheaper, better and less touristy. Bring your language guide along and you'll be fine!

M$second: go on a gondola and ship through the city, this is great!
Some places you should visit, depending on the age of time you prefer:
Palazzo Ducale, Fondaco dei Turchi, Scuola Grande di San Marco
This are just names of 3 great places, but like i said, go ship through the city, you will be able to see many great places in that town.
Have a look at http://www.comune.venezia.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/EN/IDPagina/1
you may find a current event in town, you will have a better point of view from the people living there while taking part in a local event! (also they are often at beautiful places, whole town is beautiful!)
