What pieces of music should young children not live without? No Raffi please. A-Tisket-a-Tasket by Ella Fitzgerald is one! It has to groove
and be classic or just plain grab-your-gut wonderful.

I have three girls myself, and we named our oldest Ella after Ella Fitzgerald. They are exposed to a whole lot of music, but no Raffi! Of what they should not live without, here's what they seem to prefer, in really random order from different genres and decades, but heavy on funk and Motown.
The Sound of Music Soundtrack
John Williams Soundtracks (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc.)
Paul McCartney - Band on the Run, Admiral Halsey
Cake "Short Skirt, Long Jacket"
The Who "Baba O'Reily"
Beach Boys, The Tempations, The Spinners, Sam Cooke, James Brown - most any of the hits by these groups
Parliament - "Flashlight"
Most late 70's funk/disco, like Commodores, Chaka, The Gap band "You Dropped a Bomb On Me"
The Dazz Band "Let it Whip"
Louis Prima - "Sing, Sing, Sing" "The Dummy Song" "Angelina"
Louis Jordan - "Caldonia"
Louis Armstrong - "Wonderful World"
Ray Charles "(Night Time Is) The Right Time"
Frank Sinatra "Fly Me to the Moon" "I've Got you Under My Skin"
Vivaldi - "The Four Seasons"
Aretha Franklin - "Respect"
Otis Redding - "Try A Little Tenderness"
And the ultimate band for kids' music: The Beatles
Maybe later they'll turn on to Billie Holiday, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Dylan, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, blues, folk and jazz. Now that they have their own iPods, they listen to more age-appropriate stuff (driven hard by Disney and Nickleodeon) but they still mix in the older stuff.

My daughter loved Spring from Vivaldi too.
She memorized by 6 years old:
Help, Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper, and Rubber Soul
I started her out on Sarah Vaughn's "Lullaby of Birdland", but she fell prey to the Wiggles (AHHHHH!&!*&!) and now is a Disney fan. She can scat, create, and improvise. Sings pretty well in tune most of the time. AND, she does it with a lot of good style. Hope your kids do too. Thanks.
