what pieces can the rook change places with in the chess game. I believed rook and only the king can be switched when it is never moved.

I agree with you, that only the king can be switched with the rook when it is not moved. The use of rook in exchanging with the position of the king is called castling.

- The king has not been moved yet
- The rook being castled has not moved yet
- There are no pieces between the king and the rook
- None of the spaces through which the king moves in the castling is under threat by an opponent's piece
