What performers are recognized as the pioneers of modern day Hip Hop music?
It's hard to say exactly when Hip Hop established itself as a genre of music ... there's probably some disagreement on exactly how it happened and who started it, given that it evolved over time. The first band I can think of that created Hip Hop music is Sugar Hill Gang (see video below).
Is any one artist (or group of artists) formally credited as the founder of the Hip Hop genre? Did the early performers refer to themselves as Hip Hop artists at the time, or did the name of the genre come later?

Rappers delight was really the first commercially successful rap.
As far as the originators I'm gonna go with DJ Kool Herc. He claims to have coined the term hip hop but so do a lot of others. Besides that Grandmasta Flash was really the first one to take it into a new level and perfect the idea.

I would say herc started it, but alot of people divide hip hop into two eras. There is the old school and the golden era. So modern hip hop would be derived from the golden era, in this case i would say Easy-E is the father of modern hip hop. He was extremely influential in the beginning of the golden era for gathering and trying to promote members of NWA who went on to be more successful than him but still would not be where they are today without him. Also when comparing new Hip Hop to Kool herc it sounds completely different, its not that far away from Easy E though.
