HPV is Human Papilloma Virus. Human Papilloma Virus is a sexual transmitted disease. It can be extremely dangerous with no outward symptoms. It is known to cause cervical cancer. It is also associated with other cancers such as oral, skin, and anal cancer. HPV generally affects teenage girls and women in their twenties. During their lifetime nearly three fourths of all women will contract Human Papilloma Virus. Having HPV, especially untreated HPV, puts women at a very high risk for developing cervical cancer. It is still unknown why Human Papilloma Virus causes an increased risk for developing cervical cancer. Nearly half a million women develop cervical cancer each year. Half of these women die. HPV types 16 and 18 cause seventy percent of all cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is extremely dangerous and must be treated as soon as possible to avoid serious problems, such as cervical cancer.
