What percentage of LOLs and LMAOs are real?

I really think that most of the LOLS and LMAOs used on IM are just an expression that more than often does not mean that person is actually laughing out loud literally. The fact that it is easier to type LOL or even LMAO than writing out "this is so funny", people just tend to use these abbreviations redundantly.

I'm not sure about "LOL", but I'm definitely sure that there have been no reported cases of severed buttocks as a result of laughing, so I'll say 0% for "LMAO".

They're a side effect of the natural but limited way we communicate online. I cannot sense inflection in your voice or body language, so I project it when needed.
