According to USAToday reports, only 20% of americans have passports. That was in 2005.

This is a very good question asked by a person to whom the question was posed. From my testing, I would suggest that over 65% of Americans do not have a passport - why would they need one anyway - most people don't leave america.

Believe it or not there are no official numbers on this. We do get a number from the US State Dept. citing how many passports are issued every year, which you can extrapolate, but due to 9-11 changes travel to Canada, Mexico and the Carribbean now requires a US passport so there was a huge number of applications in recent years. Many other factors, such as military ID travel and dual citizenship make a 'true' answer hard to find. http://www.gyford.com/phil/writing/2003/01/31/how_many_america.php
